What Is Masonry?

Masonry consists of building structures from single units that are laid and bound together with mortar. Brick, stone, and concrete blocks are the most common materials used in masonry construction.

Masonry is a popular construction technique around the world, due to its many advantages. However, like with any construction method, there are also limitations.

Types of Masonry

Brick Masonry

Brick masonry is defined as the placement of bricks in a systematic manner using mortar to bind the bricks together and create a solid mass that can withstand a great deal of pressure. Bricks come in many different colors and variations. It can also involve terra-cotta, stone, concrete, blocks, and tiles. Most commonly, clay brick and concrete blocks are utilized by masons.

Stone Masonry

Stone masonry is a type of building masonry construction that uses stones and mortar. This construction technique is used for building foundations, floors, retaining walls, arches, walls and columns. The stones used for masonry construction are natural rocks. These natural rocks are cut and dressed into proper shape in order to use it in masonry construction. Stones are one of the most durable and strong building materials.

Concrete Masonry

Concrete masonry is block, brick, or tile building units of molded concrete laid by masons in a wall. This construction is used in several construction applications. Concrete masonry unit (CMU) is constructed from two principal materials — Portland cement and aggregates such as sand and crushed stone. The aggregates form the block’s main structure, while the cement binds the aggregates together.
